Score 94/100 · Drink 2024-2030, Eric Guido, Vinous, Mar 2024

The cool-vintage 2004 Aglianico del Vulture Titolo blends mentholated herbs and dried strawberries with enriching notes of brown spice and fig. This is cool-toned and classic, with fresh acidity and a tinge of minerality up front, giving way to polished red berry fruits that flow under an air of rosy inner florals. The 2004 still displays a youthful tension, the result of zesty acidity rather than tannins. A pleasantly crunchy sensation of tart cranberry hangs around on the close. This was Fucci's first vintage after finishing her oenology degree at the University of Pisa. It shows the style she has refined over the last 20 years, maturing in a combination of tonneaux and 200-liter barriques.

The 2004 Aglianico del Vulture Titolo is a wine of amazing beauty. Its personality is timid and understated initially, but its true spirit comes alive with confident and articulate tones as the wine slowly opens in the glass. Nothing is obvious about the 2004 Titolo. It is sleek and flirtatious, revealing what it wants to show one delicate aroma at a time. Dried fruit, cassis, bright berry, earthy tones, crushed mineral and exotic spice peel off layer by layer. The wine shows an inky dark, garnet color with lively highlights of ruby and crimson. Its concentration is equally bold and dense with a perfect, although seemingly oxymoronic weightless determination that underlines its pedigree and elegance. In the mouth, Titolo exhibits firm, but polished and fine tannins that add to the overall textural richness. This vintage shows all the qualities for long aging.

Fucci's 2004 Aglianico del Vulture Titolo is a gorgeous version of this wine. It possesses more complexity than the 2005, with a layered personality that flows effortlessly onto the palate. Gorgeous aromatics accompany an array of dark cherries, tobacco, herbs, spices and smoke as the wine reveals the full breadth of its expressiveness. This is a superb effort from Elena Fucci.
