Tasting notes
Fresh pear, cress, lime and nutmeg scent the nose of the Gouges white 2006 Nuits St.-Georges Perrieres. Juicier, more refreshing on the palate than the corresponding Clos des Porrets (grown a mere hundred meters away, but on much chalkier soil) yet at the same time flatteringly creamy in texture, it finishing with striking counterpoint of creaminess; citricity; zesty, tactile, slightly chewy pungency; and a hint of cherry pit bitterness. Either of these white Nuits-St.-Georges should be fascinating to follow from bottle for at least 5-7 years. Pierre and Christian Gouges are perpetuating the remarkable legacy of their grandfather whose discovery in 1936 and subsequent propagation in the Perrieres vineyard of white mutant Pinot, has since been followed by plantings in two further sites at the domaine, not to mention at the estates of other Cote de Nuits vignerons who possessed friendly ties to the Gouges family, unusually chalky parcels, and a taste for adventure.
