Score 94/100 · Drink 2015-2022, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jan 2015

The 2012 Pinot Noir Katherine Lindsay Estate is one of the brighter, more lifted wines in the range. There is plenty of intensity and depth in the glass, but a dollop of whole clusters here adds compelling floral and savory overtones. This delicious, superb Pinot speaks to balance above all else. The clonal selections are Swan and Calera. In 2012, the Pinots can be a bit heavy; but not here - the Katherine Lindsay is pure class.

The sensational 2012 Pinot Noir Katherine Lindsay Estate was made primarily from the Calera clone of Pinot Noir, which appears to be the clonal material most favored by Paul Hobbs. A dense ruby/purple color is followed by notes of forest floor, black raspberries, black cherries and spice. Full-bodied, dense and rich with velvety tannins and enough acidity to provide delineation, there are 812 cases of this cuvée that should drink well for 8-12 years.

Deep ruby. Cherry, blood orange and woodsmoke on the pungent nose. Deeply pitched black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors are complemented by licorice and cocoa powder, with a suave vanilla nuance coming up with air and adding sweetness. Finishes spicy, gently tannic and very long, leaving blood orange and candied cherry notes behind.

The 2012 Pinot Noir Katherine Lindsay Estate stands out for its polish and balance. Floral notes meld into juicy red berries, mint and sweet spices. Ferrous notes develop over time, but they remain very much in the background, while floral overtones appear on the finish, adding lift, perfume and precision.
