Named after Jensen’s neighbor, Stephan Asseo of L’Aventure, the 2009 My Favorite Neighbor boasts gorgeous depth and seemingly endless layers of fruit to match an impeccable, polished personality that is absolutely irresistible. The 2009 is 25% each Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot plus 12.5% each Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. Behind Eric Jensen’s outgoing, boisterous personality lies the mind of one of the most thoughtful and introspective winemakers in Paso Robles. The handful of 2011s I tasted were delicate, perfumed and quite pretty, but with less depth and structure than either the 2009s or the 2010s. Lifted nose with loads of fruit and hints of new wood. Then hints of currant bush. Lots of fresh herbs. Full and very rich with opulent blackberry and blueberries, then hints of chocolate. Goes on for minutes. Wild wine. 25% Syrah, 25% Cabernet Sauvginon, 25% Petit Verdot, 12.5% Malbec, and 12.5% Cabernet Franc. Better in 2013.
