Very dark and glowing – looks more like a Napa Cabernet. Smells like an overripe Napa Cabernet! Extremely modernist and actually high VA and unappetisingly drying on the end. Really a bit of a travesty. (JR)

The 2006 Barolo Vigna Cappella di Santo Stefano flows with wild cherries, new leather, licorice and smoke in a rich, sumptuous expression of this pristine hillside vineyard. The French oak is a little more in evidence here vis-à-vis the estate's other 2006 Baroli. The Santo Stefano shows marvelous density and richness, but will require quite a bit of patience.

Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031. Proprietor Rodolfo Migliorini has another set of gorgeous wines on his hands with these 2006 Baroli. A house style built on textural richness remains very much in evidence, but in recent years the overt oakiness the wines once showed has come down, allowing the estate’s vineyards to show more of their true and highly unique voices. Monforte d'Alba. Deep ruby with small orange-tinged rim. Tar notes and ever so slightly medicinal. Tarry fruit palate, with biting acidity and stalky tannins. Oxidative, and this seems to have robbed it of its charm. (WS)
