The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a lot of new oak on the nose, although there is enough fruit to absorb that with bottle age, and feels a little generic at the moment, showing some brettanomyces. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black cherry and mulberry fruit, slightly lower acidity than its peers and a creamy-textured finish. I was surprised by this showing given my regard for Pascal Mugneret's winemaking. Maybe it was just this bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru is blended with 70% whole bunches and around 40% new oak. There is impressive volume on the nose, which features engaging red currant, crushed strawberry, quince and light peony aromas that gain intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip on the entry and fine mineralité . Nicely poised, with superb tension on the finish. Yes, this Echézeaux has a lighter chassis than others, but there is real intensity here.

Barrel sample. Mid crimson. Inviting fruit sweetness on the nose. Ripest of cherry fruit and some savoury spice. Plenty of fruit on the palate but the structure is quite light and the tannins fine-boned. The nose and the palate seem quite different. A bit stalky but in this wine the fruit can carry it better and it adds freshness. Needs more time to fill out the core. (JH)
