The auction-destined 2005 Graacher Domprobst Riesling Auslese A.P. #2 offers a nose of over-ripe melon, brown spices, apple jelly. Oily in texture and tinged with the spice and honey of botrytis on the palate, this then finishes with a shocking brightness and vivacity of citrus infiltrating a finish of quince preserves, apple jelly and jellied red currant. While it may not exhibit the layering or the elegance and delicacy of several of the best wines here today, this A.P. #2, with its dynamic of brightness and tartness playing (at present even a bit roughly) against creamy, richly botrytized, honeyed, jellied fruits and low tones, will continue to speak with a voice that is all its own.
