Tasting notes
Red-ruby.Subdued but pure nose hints at cherry, raspberry and cured tobacco. Densely packed but distinctly tighter-grained than the East Block, with flavors of cherry, cola and earth. This intense pinot is plenty fleshy but less fruity and forthcoming today. Intriguing notes of black pepper and licorice on the long finish. This, too, remained fresh and seamless with extended aeration, but needs time in bottle to express itself.

The 2004 Pinot Noir West Block (400 cases) is one of the most profound Pinot Noirs I have ever tasted... from anywhere. Huge floral, black raspberry, forest floor, cherry liqueur, black currants, and Asian spice aromas soar from the glass of this remarkably intense offering. With a layered, multi-textured, full-bodied palate, profound length, and dazzling purity as well as equilibrium, it is a tour de force in Pinot Noir as well as an exquisite example of just how far California winemakers have progressed in taming this fickle varietal. Kudos to Tom Rochioli, one of the truly great guys of the wine business. Tel. (707) 433-2305; Fax (707) 433-2358
