Another real head-turner, Turley's Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard has so much to say. The flavors are bold, inky and explosive in the classic Hayne style, but there is also plenty of nuance lurking beneath all of that intensity. Blueberry jam, dark spices, menthol, licorice, plums and bittersweet chocolate flow from a virile, imposing Petite that will drink well for many, many years.

Not yet bottled, the 2013 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard could possibly rival the near-perfection of the 2013 Pesenti Petite Syrah. Blueberry, blackberry, acacia flowers and almost gravelly alluvial notes jump from the glass of this full-bodied, massive, concentrated wine. The tannins are very high, but they are sweet and well-integrated. This should turn out to be a prodigious Petite Syrah to begin drinking in about 10-15 years and cellar for children and grandchildren over the following 30-50 or more years. Petite Syrah, if you haven’t guessed by now, is the quintessential anti-oxidant among red wines and has almost immortal aging potential.

There is not a thing out of place in the 2013 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard. Supple, silky and layered in the glass, the 2013 presents a striking interplay of aromas and flavors, with beams of precise, graphite-inflected minerality that lend brightness and energy. Crushed flowers, iron, smoke, sweet spices, orange zest and white pepper are all woven into the powerful yet super-finessed finish.
