The 2014 Riesling Alte Reben Mosel (White Capsule) has an open, elegant and delicate bouquet with lovely slate intermixed with ripe apple aromas. This is a very delicate, round and salty Riesling with a very long and salty, tension-filled and mineral finish. This is so filigreed and so complex and long -- as if Mozart had composed this Riesling. This beauty contains great terroirs not only from Ürzig, Kinheim, and Zeltingen, but the whole Middle Mosel. Sourced from parcels in Ockfener Bockstein and Saarburger Rausch, this legally trocken bottling weighs in at 12 percent alcohol after light chaptalization. Lemon oil, bruised apple skin and green herbs figure on a pungent nose, ushering in a tart apple and lemon palate. Stony and charred notes lend a certain austerity to the brightly juicy finish. This may well just need more time in bottle to show a more generous side and live up to the expectations created by a long line of Molitor Saar Alte Reben bottlings (until 2012 sourced from ancient vines in Niedermennig).

Markus Molitor is now among the largest privately owned wine estates in the Mosel and also one of the best. With a focus on single-vineyard expressions, the estate produces between 80 and 90 different wines each vintage.
