Score 89-92/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jan 2012

(racked three days before my visit without exposure to air; just at the end of its malo; 13.3% natural alcohol): Bright, deep red. Open-knit aromas of musky red fruits and coffee; smells round. Then fat, rich and chewy, in a distinctly powerful, masculine style. Currently dominated by rocky, saline minerality and a tad rustic owing to the recent racking. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins. Clavelier has been a tenant farmer here since 2008.
