Tasting notes
The 2017 Volnay Clos de la Caves des Ducs 1er Cru is completely de-stemmed this year. It has a very subtle bouquet, tightly wound and poised, featuring crushed stone, almost flint-like aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, wonderful poise and purity and a sappy, very silky finish that is utterly seductive. This is one of Leroux’s best reds this year.

Calcareous soils. Monopole (lots of monopoles in Volnay), 60 ares (1.5 acres). From tank. Very pretty and sweetly scented. Then a firm depth of savoury and fruity combined on the palate. The prettiness mainly on the nose. Lightly chewy texture, less avenant (friendly, comely) than the Mitans, compact and needs a bit more time to open on the palate compared with the nose. Supple but deep. (JH)
