Dark red-ruby. More evolved on the nose than the 2002, conveying a roasted-fruit character to the aromas of raspberry compote and dark chocolate. Distinctly liqueur-like on the palate, like a coulis of fruits. Obviously superripe and jammy--and shows the effect of the hot, dry period in September--but "only" 15.2% alcohol. In a very sweet style that some purists will consider over the top but has the spine of tannins to maintain its shape. This wine, too, will probably gain in clarity and complexity with another few years of cellaring.

This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is from the beautiful Bryant Family Vineyard overlooking Lake Hennessey. Made following a period of turmoil (changing winemakers, lawsuits, etc.) at this estate, the dense purple-colored 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon possesses a classic nose of spring flowers, blueberry liqueur and creme de cassis, 15.2% natural alcohol, and a complex, sweet, rich, full-bodied mouthfeel. There are many great vineyard sites in this area, and Bryant is exploiting theirs to the maximum. Drinkable now, this beauty should keep for 10-15 more years. www.bryantwines.com

Ruby-red. Crushed cassis and caramel on the nose. Dense and sweet on the palate, with a deep core of cassis fruit. Powerful, ripe, long wine, finishing with sweet tannins and a youthful, juicy quality. This needs a few years of patience. Just 400 cases were produced from a very small harvest. The 2001 vintage was the first harvest here to include the recently replanted portion of this vineyard.

Full medium ruby. Subtle aromas of blackberry, licorice, minerals, cough syrup and medicinal herbs; less sweet and exuberant than the '02. Then deep, layered, harmonious and bright, with flavors of black fruits, violet, minerals and bitter chocolate. Very fine-grained, extremely concentrated cabernet with a touch of youthful austerity. Firmly tannic finish builds slowly and lingers impressively. The production here in 2003 was barely half that of the previous year, due to the tiny size of the berries.
