Score 94/100 · Drink 2022-2036, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2020

Saturated ruby to the rim. Brooding, youthfully medicinal scents of cassis, blueberry, licorice and graphite. Utterly suave and seamless on entry, then densely packed, light on its feet and intense in the middle palate, with displaying terrific acid/mineral lift to its dark berry and licorice flavors. Stands out for its cool Coombsville energy, definition and inner-mouth lift and its serious yet utterly harmonious tannins. The very long, slowly rising finish perfumes the mouth with black fruits and violet. This remarkably seamless wine also boasts outstanding lift and inner-mouth verve. Crushed-rock volcanic minerality contributes grip to the finish. Ultimately classier and more structured than the Quartet but the latter wine is more pliant today.

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is another stellar wine in this lineup. The personality of a cold year that was punctuated by heat spikes at the end of the season comes through loud and clear. Bold, ripe and powerful, but with plenty of underlying structure, the 2010 has the balance to drink well for many years to come. All the elements are in the right place.

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon wraps around the palate with gorgeous depth. Spices, grilled herbs, dark red cherries, tobacco and dried flowers all take shape in a voluptuous, resonant wine endowed with terrific intensity and purity. Today the aromatics are especially expressive and attractive. This is a beautifully balanced, totally harmonious Cabernet from Dancing Hares.

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa from proprietor Fritz Hatton is another winner. Rich and dense with an inky/blue/purple color, plenty of tannin and graphite, a touch of oak, and attractive spice, purity and texture, this young Cabernet should be forgotten for several more years, and drunk over the following 15-20, perhaps longer. This wine’s dense purple color is followed by abundant aromas of creme de cassis, licorice, subtle smoke, and a truffle-infused earthiness. Tel. (707) 963-5918
