The 2014 Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru comprises of two barrels this year. It bears the most semblance to the 2014 Chapelle-Chambertin on the nose, those bunches of roses popping up once again, accompanied by raspberry preserve and strawberry scents, later just a suggestion of Thai fish oil. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine, supple tannin. This is clean and precise, quite spicy towards the finish that has very fine depth, though maybe it does not quite possess (or is hiding) that killer X-factor on the finish that reverts to something more conservative. A Chambertin that is serious and will demand several years in bottle.

Sold as Vieilles Vignes since 2013 because the vines are more than 50 years old. Not an especially deep crimson. Intense, pretty majestic nose. Also quite lifted, amazingly enough. This dances in a way that only burgundy can. In the meat and veg spectrum of flavours. Very juicy. At this early stage it’s lighter than some vintages I can remember although it will presumably take on weight. Builds towards great power towards the end of the palate. This should develop into something pretty majestic. (JR)

Domaine Ponsot is one of the most well-known estates in the Côte de Nuits, famed for owning three of the original four hectares of the Clos de la Roche Grand Cru. The legendary domaine also produces another nine Grand Cru cuvées.
