You do not see bottles of the 1978 Vosne-Romanée from Domaine Georges Mugneret often, least so in jeroboam format, probably one of a handful ever made. Perhaps the larger format preserved this far better than in bottle. Mature in hue, it shares the ferrous vein of the ’79 Ruchotte-Chambertin poured virtually alongside, augmented here with vestiges of Morello cherry, damp moss/undergrowth and rose petal scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, far fresher than you would expect from an almost 40-year old village cru, lovely balance with a poise, piquant finish that is pure joy. What a pleasure to drink this sitting opposite Marie-Christine herself. Tasted at the La Paulée in Beaune.
