Score 90/100 · Drink 2019-2029, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2017

The 2014 de Malleret offers a striking interplay of ripe fruit and perfumed, savory aromatics. Sweet tobacco, grilled herbs and tobacco add striking dimensions of nuance to a core of intense dark fruit. All the elements are simply in the right place. The blend is 66% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. This is the first vintage made by consulting oenologists Frédéric Massie and Hannah Fiegenschu of Stéphane Derenoncourt's team.

Ripeness is pushed to the maximum in the 2014 de Malleret. Silky tannins wrap around a core of dark fruit, with tobacco, leather and savory herb overtones that add complexity. The blend is 66% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, with the opulence of Merlot coming through loud and clear. Sweet, silky tannins round things out in a stylish Haut-Médoc. This is the first vintage made by consulting oenologists Frédéric Massie and Hannah Fiegenschu of Stéphane Derenoncourt's team. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see how things develop here in the coming years.

The Château de Malleret 2014 has a nose that can be summed up in one word: licorice. The palate is chewy on the entry with dry tannin and an astringent finish that does not bode well.

A Stéphane Derenoncourt wine. Dark purple. Easy and round. A little lightweight but certainly well balanced. Fresh, vital finish. Good, simple, early drink. (JR)
