2015 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets

The 2015 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1e Cru has a taut and focused nose, quite Puligny in style, shucked oyster shells and menthol-like as it moves into secondary aromas. The palate is very well balanced with fine acidity, taut and strict, lightly spiced with almond, nutmeg and roasted walnut towards the complex finish. Superb.

The 2015 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has the pick of the aromatics from the Domaine this year. It clearly has the most complex bouquet, not explosive per se, yet unfolding with each swirl it reveals hints of aniseed, sesame and citrus fruit, an underlying mineral note becoming more expressive with time. The palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity, very taut and linear but there is plenty of energy here with that trademark salinity surfacing towards the finish. Superb. This really expresses the terroir with great clarity.

The 2015 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets is the most aromatically reserved of Lamy-Caillat's premiers crus, opening in the glass with a pure nose of white peach, citrus zest, spring flowers and wet limestone. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, glossy and texturally refined, with appreciable chewy extract and multidimensional structure, its finish long and chalky. It's hard to choose between this and the superb La Romanée, but they are very different in personality.
