The 2014 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru, which I recall did not show particularly well from barrel, appears to have improved in bottle. It is tightly wound on the nose, not as expressive as either the 2011 and 2013. This is earthier in style, less airy than previous vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and feels fleshier than the nose augurs. There is an insistent grip to this 2014, chalky in texture towards the finish with impressive length. This might be entering an awkward phase, so I would suggest leaving bottles in the cellar for two or three more years. Tasted at the Gouges retrospective at La Cabotte.

Pale cherry red. Very pale rim. Sweet, jewelly, pretty intense nose with a hint of violets. On the palate it is far from intense (has the fruit faded over the last month?) but the structure is delightful. Very clean and brisk without being at all tart. A pretty wine with a presence of fine tannins on the end. (JR)

Bright palish red. Medicinal cherry, raspberry and mint on the nose, lifted by a floral quality. Elegant, dry and classic if a bit lean, conveying an impression of energy to the flavors of red fruits and saline minerality. Finishes tight and salty. Like the village wine, this is in a rather delicate style.
