Tasting notes
The 2017 Volnay Santenots du Milieu 1er Cru is one of the hidden gems in this collection. Dense, powerful and ample in the glass, the Santenots exudes richness from start to finish. Inky dark fruit, leather, spice and licorice build in a Burgundy endowed with tremendous plushness and volume. The Santenots is a wine I don't hear about much when it comes to Leroy. That's a shame, as the 2017 is a real showstopper.

Aromas of cassis and plums mingle with notions of pencil lead, woodsmoke and rich soil tones, introducing the 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots du Milieu, a medium to full-bodied, velvety and succulent wine, with good depth at the core and powdery structuring tannins, concluding with a long finish. This is a comparatively giving, expressive rendition of Santenots, a cuvée that can often be a little introverted in its youth—indeed, I sometimes think it as the Clos Vougeot of the Côte de Beaune chez Leroy—though it still possesses plenty of upside.
About the producer

For many, Domaine Leroy represents the pinnacle of fine Burgundy. Owned and run by the legendary Lalou Bize-Leroy, the domaine in Vosne-Romanée is one strand of the Leroy empire, along with Maison Leroy and Domaine d’Auvenay.
