Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Corton Grand Cru from Domaine Tollot-Beaut has a well-defined nose with cranberry and redcurrant scents, just a slight metallic note loitering in the wings, but that does not deprive it of elegance or refinement. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, crisp and refined with well-judged acidity and a pure finish. It might lack substance, but there is a lovely swagger about this Corton.

The 2012 Corton is surprisingly approachable today, but then again, these wines can be deceptive when they are young. There is lovely pliancy and richness to the black cherry, spice, rose petal and mint flavors, all backed up by plenty of energy and overall structure. Today, it is the wine's overall harmony that is absolutely compelling. While the Corton is less forbidding today than it usually is at this stage, it will be even better in time.
