The Mauro Molino 2022 Barbaresco Giacosa opens with lifted floral notes followed by licorice, fresh mint and a firm line of dry tannins that frame the wine’s restrained fruit profile. East-facing exposures in this Treiso MGA lend freshness and balance in a warm vintage, resulting in a nuanced expression with good complexity and length. Recently acquired by the Molino family after a period of leasing, this vineyard has quickly proven itself as a naturally fresh site well suited to contemporary growing conditions.

The Molino family purchased this parcel in 2022, and the 2022 Barbaresco Giacos is the first release of this cuvée, which I was also able to taste last year as a preview. A medium ruby color, it comes from this high elevation and cooler site within Treiso. It brings forward more tension and tannin, while the nose is lifted with aromas of anise, white pepper, grenadine, and floral perfume. The position of the vineyard is very important in this vineyard. The palate has a saturating feel while retaining good freshness. They did a nice job in this vintage to manage the tannins and the freshness. Drink 2025-2040.
The 2022 Barbaresco Giacosa is a new wine in this range. It shows the floral, spiced character of Treiso in its aromatics. On the palate, the Giacosa is a bit light, while the tannins show some signs of heat stress. I imagine this wine will be better in future vintages. Ripe red cherry fruit, dried flowers and sweet pipe tobacco linger.

Bruno Giacosa – now run by daughter Bruna – is a cult Nebbiolo producer, that has consistently made some of the best single-vineyard Barbaresco and Barolo from the 1960s onwards. The“red-label” Riservas are some of the finest and most collectable wines in Italy.
