Two bottles of 1926 Lafite-Rothschild are opened. The first offers airy red fruit on the nose. Tomato vine hints suggest that some batches may not have reached phenolic ripeness. There is a tad more VA here compared to the 1919 and 1922. The palate offers Morello cherries, orange peel and tangerine. It's not a complex Lafite, relatively monotone in style with a dash of cracked black pepper and even a tang of marmalade on the finish. The 1926 is steady and understated Lafite-Rothschild. The second bottle is much more refined on the nose, with an exotic touch of Turkish Delight and bergamot and a faint scent of stately home/furniture wax. Likewise, the palate has a little more depth and more gumption. Tasted at the Lafite-Rothschild vertical at Ami restaurant in Hong Kong.

In April 1991, I had the opportunity to taste (from a friend's cellar in Bordeaux) the 1926. The wine had been purchased in the thirties and kept in a cold Bordeaux cellar until this tasting. The wine was disappointing (hard and dried out).
