Score 89/100 · Drink 2017-2027, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Jun 2017

The 2008 Barolo Riserva opens to dark and savory tones with dried tobacco leaf, cherry confit and black currant. Lingering tones of licorice, tar and smoke add to the wine's aged or slightly evolved appeal. The mouthfeel is polished and taut with integrated tannins that already feel silky and long. This wine is ready to drink.

The 2008 Barolo Riserva has come together well over the last year. A big, burly Barolo in the classic Borgogno style, the 2008 nevertheless possesses striking aromatics and nuance to match all of the intensity. The tannins remain forbiddingly young, but the 2008 offers good potential, especially if the elements come together a bit more fully over the coming years. Hints of lavender, spice, mint, graphite and licorice meld into the powerful, brooding finish.

The 2008 Barolo Riserva is round, supple and nicely textured, although it is also a bit simple for the year. Hints of lavender, violets, spice, new leahter, pine, menthol and black cherries add nuance on the supple, open finish.
