The 2018 Syrah Roll Ranch, from a site in Ventura County, offers a fascinating interplay of fruit richness and savory intensity. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, licorice, sage and dried herbs all build in the glass. Whole clusters (73%) add nuance without overpowering the wine. All the elements are so well balanced. The long, substantial finish rounds things out.

The 2018 Syrah Roll Ranch is also medium to full-bodied, with a ripe, rounded mouthfeel that conceals significant tannins and structure. This blue-fruited, peppery, floral Syrah is going to need 3-4 years in the cellar. It has a history of aging beautifully and I would be surprised to see it drinking well at age 15.
