Saturated ruby-red. Superripe, highly complex nose offers kirsch, chocolate, roast coffee, violet and roasted herbs. Supple, layered and deep, with extraordinary sweetness for a wine that Chauvenet says is not much more than 12% alcohol. The flavors of red fruits, minerals and spices mount impressively toward the back, and the long, juicy, gripping finish leaves the palate fresh. A terrific example. Chauvenet notes that the 2002s go up to 4.5 grams per liter of acidity, whereas the 2003s are more like 3.1 to 3.2.

(13.9% natural alcohol) Good full medium ruby color. Distinct aromas of surmaturite: roasted cherry, raspberry, chocolate and a whiff of raisin. Fat, thick, sweet and rich, but considerably less fruity and perfumed than the Perrieres. Finishes with more obvious tannins and a hint of dryness. If this wine is not simply going through an oxidative phase, it will be likely to develop faster in bottle than the more minerally Perrieres.
Cask sample. Deep purple. Something mossy and vegetal about the nose. Very rich red fruits, too. Much more concentrated and dense than the Bousselots. Very serious and exciting. (JR)
