Dark black fruit, French oak, spices, menthol and new leather-inflected flavors inform Campogiovanni's 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Il Quercione. The style is rich, explosive and deeply marked by the French oak. Overall, this is a solid effort for the year, even if the oak is overpowering.

The 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Il Quercione is a delightful expression that is heavily shaped by the 36 months of oak-aging it undergoes. This Riserva shows a bold, dark color and sassy aromas of clove and cardamom that are almost over the top. The color is dark and impenetrable and dense blackberry and spice flavors wrap tightly around the palate. In the mouth, the wine feels chewy, fat and richly textured. Drink: 2015-2022. Campogiovanni is the Montalcino estate of the historic Chianti Classico producer San Felice based in Castelnuovo Berardenga. I noticed that a couple of the samples I received listed the producer as "San Felice" on the label. Importer: Premium Brands, www.paoloboselli.com
