Score 95/100 · Drink 2025-2035, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux, Mar 2025

This is a wine that I always like to have at home, for those evenings when you want to pour a glass of something you know is going to deliver, and works perfectly with food. It's an excellent vintage, softly spoken, raspberry, rose petals, incense, savoury smoked herbs, from four different Sangiovese clones, set across seven vineyard sites in Castellina in Chianti running from 220m to 570m altitude, 12 months in 225l and 500l oak barrels for ageing, followed by 45 days in cement tanks.

Always a solid choice on any trattoria wine list, the Mazzei 2022 Chianti Classico Fonterutoli offers fresh cherry and blueberry along with varietal tones of sweet earth and iris root. The wine is 90% Sangiovese with smaller parts of Malvasia Nera and Colorino. It goes through a quick 12 months in oak. This mid-weight red shows good intensity and silky tannins. The wine is easily accessible with 220,000 bottles made.
