Tasting notes
The 2019 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru has a clean, precise, complex bouquet with brambly red fruit, briar and touches of blood orange. The oak here is neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and is quite citrus-driven, with blood orange (again) infusing the layered red fruit. This is perhaps just missing a little grip and complexity as it sashays toward the finish. Fine. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2019 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru is matured in one-third new oak. All de-stemmed, it has a beautifully defined, floral bouquet with fine definition, rose petal and incense aromas entwined with the fruit. The palate is well-balanced with slightly chalky tannins, almost sorbet-like freshness with a tang of brown spices and blood orange towards the finish. This is showing very well.
The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is also very promising, delivering aromas of plums, raspberries, exotic spices and flowers. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and precise, like the Clos du Verseuil, this is one of the more refined wines in the range this year. I'm looking forward to revisiting it in bottle.
