Bright ruby-red. Pure, bright aromas of black raspberry, spices and crushed stone. Superripe and spicy, with flavors of cherry cough syrup and chocolate. Big and broad but less fresh in the mouth than the nose suggests. A bit dry on the back.

Domaine Bertagna’s 2.25 hectare (5.56 acre) monopole, the Vougeot Clos de la Perriere suffered “huge hydric stress” in 2003. According to Forestier, “the 25-45 year old vines lost most of their leaves and their grapes dehydrated, yet there was less damage on the oldest vines.” This violet, blackberry, and blueberry-scented wine displays excellent depth and concentration. Medium-bodied, it reveals dark plummy fruit flavors in a structured format. Drink it between 2007 and 2013. Importer: Weygandt-Metzler, Peter Weygandt, Unionville, PA; tel. (610) 486-0800

Bright ruby-red. Roasted raspberry, smoked meat, leather and musky coffee on the fla mboyantly ripe nose. Fat, sweet and liqueur-like, but with very good depth of flavor. Reasonably fresh for a wine so ripe. Shows strong smoke, earth and meat elements. This one has really come back after the malolactic fermentation, notes Forestier.

Mid crimson. Quite liqueur like on the nose. Intense. Thick and dense with a certain polish. Quite dramatic and certainly sweet and quite brûlée, which is house style. (JR)
