Tasting notes
The 2022 Poggio Valente is dense and quite powerful in the glass. Macerated cherry, plum, spice, leather, licorice and a kick of sweet oak are all amplified. I would cellar this for at least a year or two. There's plenty of depth here. Perhaps that will help all the elements to meld together a bit more fully. Time in the glass helps a lot, as Sangiovese notes become more pronounced as the wine opens. For now, Poggio Valente shows a lot of vintage 2022 ripeness, but I am cautiously optimistic about its prospects, given how well it develops with aeration.

Here is another knock-out bottle in this group of new releases from Fattoria le Pupille. The 2022 Poggio Valente is punchy and bright with terrific clarity of fruit. Winemaking has shifted over the years to prioritize larger oak botte. This change has allowed for more varietal expression with blue flower, heritage rose, tart cherry, rye bread and crushed stone. The wine's flavor signature is wholly Mediterranean with hints of rosemary and lavender. The effect is especially luminous and lifted in 2022. This is an elegant wine with a unique voice.
Full bottle 1,247 g. Sangiovese grown in Elizabetta Geppetti's Pereta vineyard. Transparent garnet verging on ruby. Very round and satisfying with true maritime Sangiovese character coming out. Gentle yet very obviously varietal. Tangy, dry finish with lovely, soft, appetising fruit on the way there. Long and really as luscious as Sangiovese gets. (JR)
