Rose, potpourri, red and black fruits, and very floral notes all emerge from the 2022 Côte Rôtie Côte Brune, a medium to full-bodied Côte Rôtie that has beautiful tannins, an incredible sense of minerality, and a very long finish. Just another quintessential Côte Brune that shows the floral character, as well as the elegance, this cuvée is known for, hide bottles for 5-7 years if you can and enjoy over the following 2-3 decades. Drink 2030-2050. One of the benchmark estates for traditionally made Côte Rôtie, Domaine Jamet is today run by Jean-Paul Jamet alongside his son Loïc, with the support of Jean-Paul's wife Corinne and daughter Fanny. Located high above the appellation near the village of Le Vallin, the estate farms 25 parcels spread across 17 lieux-dits, with the majority of the holdings in the schist-dominated Côte Brune side of the appellation, including Chavaroche, Le Truchet, Les Moutonnes, Rochins, Fongeant, and La Landonne, as well as prime parcels in the Côte Blonde sector such as Lancement. Winemaking here is classic yet not dogmatic, with a strong preference for whole cluster fermentation with adjustments based on the vintage. The wines are aged primarily in older demi-muids, with 15-30% new oak, and are bottled unfined and unfiltered after about two years. While the flagship Côte Rôtie remains a blend of their numerous parcels, a small-production Côte Brune cuvée was introduced in 2015. While it would be easy to assume the Côte Brune bottling is a richer, more powerful wine, it is often a more perfumed, floral, and elegant expression compared to the classic cuvée. Jean-Paul has commented that while the recent vintages of 2018, 2019, and 2020 bordered on excessive in style, he was thrilled with the 2022s, which mark a return to more stylistically classic ripeness levels and balance.

One of the most impressive wines of the vintage is the 2022 Cote Rotie Cote Brune from Jamet family. Crafted from a tiny plot of 0.5 hectares and with only 2,500 bottles produced, it reveals a singular, surprising bouquet of rose, lychee, violets, cassis and flowers mingled with lovely spicy notes, turning chocolaty with aeration. Full-bodied, dense and compact at this stage, it's framed by structured, velvety tannins, a seamless, multidimensional core of fruit and culminates in a telluric, mineral finish enhanced by subtle notes of pencil lead and licorice, giving this wine some mystery. Still maturing in barrels, this racy thoroughbred will take some time to hit its stride. Kudos!

Bottled just one week before my visit, the 2022 Côte-Rôtie Côte Brune is a total knockout. Pristine blood orange, elderflower, mint, rosewater, violet, pencil shaving and blackberry create an enticing aromatic profile that captivates the senses. Touching the palate with mind-boggling intensity and elevated flavor concentration, the ravishingly beautiful 2022 bursts with youthful energy, culminating with peppery gradations on an almost endless finish. This is the stuff of your dreams.

Cask sample. Gorgeous nose, spice and ripe fruits, violets, raspberry and so wonderfully perfumed. The palate is fine and super-intense with succulent tannins. Juicy, delicious and super-fine. Elegant and layered on the finish as well, beautifully balanced and poised – so good even at this stage. Needs a huge amount of time to come together. (AC)
