The 2014 Clos la Madeleine has retained that plush bouquet that I remarked upon when I tasted the wine from barrel. It doles out some really quite lovely redcurrant, crushed strawberry, blood orange and light spicebox notes, the oak neatly enmeshed. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannin. To be honest, the palate has not quite kept up with the nose and is missing some depth. As a consequence, it feels quite linear and correct, whereas I would have been seeking a bit more gusto and vigor. Not a bad Saint Emilion for sure, but this is one where I might have just picked a day later.

The 2014 Clos La Madeleine is a bold, racy wine. Ripe red cherry, smoke, tobacco, torrefaction and French oak notes are all pushed forward. Although not especially complex, the 2014 is very nicely done. Drink this juicy Saint-Émilion over the next few years.

The 2014 Clos La Madeleine is an attractive if somewhat straightforward offering laced with dark red and purplish-hued fruit. Definition and intensity are missing in a wine that nevertheless offers solid potential, if not a ton of character. The blend is 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. Hubert de Boüard is the consulting winemaker.

Mid crimson. Slightly stewed fruit on the nose. ‘Bloody’ sensation (fruit and salt) and maybe just a bit simple. Certainly relatively forward but easy to like and not too tart. (JR)
