Lovely black-cherry nose with some rooty nuances. Generous body with plenty of fruit wrapped around the solid core of moderately dry tannin. Bold and crisp finish. From a 1.4 hectare site in Jadot’s sole possession. Drink or hold.

The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Barre Monopole (Maison Louis Jadot) is more structured than the Mitans, bursting with aromas of plums, candied peel, spices and toasty new oak. Medium-bodied, chalky and a little reserved on this showing, I expect it to round out nicely.

The 2019 Volnay Clos de la Barre 1er Cru demonstrates more finesse and coherence compared to the Santenots, offering pure dark cherry and boysenberry fruit mixed with light violet aromas. The lush, generous palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a silky-smooth texture and layers of black cherry and cassis toward the seductive finish. Just very... Volnay.

Cask sample. Bright garnet with some evolution at the rim. Still a hint of oak on the nose but really exciting fruit. Not to say thrilling! That very sweet undertow dominates and there is still a slightly raw note in terms of tannin quality but this has the ingredients for a pretty smart future. Perhaps it’s just slightly sweeter than perfection but I may be being over-critical. (JR)
