The 2013 Volnay Clos de la Barre 1er Cru is minty like the Beaune Cras, yet less pronounced with bright red fruit mixed with sage and orange rind. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, a little dry and leafy towards the finish where the fruit has ebbed away, leaving some astringency on the finish.

Medium red. Medicinal black and red cherry and raspberry aromas are lifted by a floral element. Round and fleshy in the mouth, showing a nicely restrained sweetness to its red berry and menthol flavors. A bit youthfully ungiving on the back end, with lingering fruit sweetness competing with a serious dusting of tannins.

(just one barrel produced, vs. a normal three or four): Medium red. Cool, medicinal aromas of black cherry and menthol. Densely packed but with a dry edge and a pronounced salty character. Tough going today: I wanted more fruit.

The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Barre has a slightly gamey bouquet that opens generously in the glass: red cherries, strawberry and sage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, grippy tannins and more density than the Santenots '13. This has very good weight on the finish, although at the moment it feels burly and does not quite have the finesse. Perhaps that will develop with age? Cellar this for three or four years.
