Subdued aromas of lemon, lime and powdered stone. Denser and richer than the Chevalieres but still with the classic dryness and firm minerality of young Blagny, along with notes of apple, spices and menthol. Quite silky and suave on the back end, with a piquant white pepper note giving the finish a distinctly juicy quality. (Elsa Matrot noted that this wine is actually less austere in recent years owing to the estate's organic farming practices.)

The 2012 Meursault 1er Cru Blagny has a tightly wound walnut and gravel-scented nose that demands more coaxing than the village cru. The palate is fresh on the entry with sour lemon and green apple. There is nice weight here, very expressive of its terroir with a crisp, quite punchy finish. Fine. Thierry and Pascal have been running this domaine since they took over the running of what was known as Domaine Joseph Matrot in 2000. They farm just under 20 hectares of vine, including a choice selection of premier crus in the Cote de Beaune. Though I did not have the opportunity to taste a full selection of their latest release, I was suitably impressive by the four wines that were presented in London. Vibrant apple fruit with a bit of slate and steeliness thrown in – lots of assertive character here. Chewy and dense. (RH)

Delicate, mealy citrus. Much the best of the Matrot whites tasted, with a salty minerality and crisp finish. Still not a great deal of depth but much more persistence. (JH)
