Tasting notes
The 2021 Barbaresco Montestefano is every bit as compelling as it was last year. If anything, the 2021 has started to shut down in bottle, which is not surprising at all for a classically built young Nebbiolo. Floral and savory overtones meld into sweet macerated cherry, incense, dried herbs and tobacco. Readers will have to be patient. The 2021 has considerable structure and pedigree, but those elements aren't on full display today, while acid and tannin are a bit prominent. The 2021 saw 45 days on the skins, including a period of submerged cap maceration, then about 30 months in cask.

The 2021 Barbaresco Montestefano is positively stellar. Sweet red cherry, cedar, leather, tobacco, cinnamon and dried herbs emerge with a bit of coaxing. Translucent and quite deep, the 2021 embodies everything Nebbiolo is and can be. Floral overtones and super-elegant, silky tannins extend the effortless finish. A wine of classicism and exceptional harmony, the 2021 is so impressive, even in the very early going.
