A wine I’ve had numerous times, yet never as spectacular as on this occasion, the 100% Grenache 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape Colombis sports a deep ruby, opaque color to go with a huge nose of lavender, incense, Provencal herbs, licorice and ground pepper. Nothing comes closer to representing the essence of Provence, and this full-bodied, unctuous, elegant and sexy effort has sweet tannin, not a single hard edge to be found and a blockbuster finish. It’s drinking so well now, I don’t see any reason to hold off, but I suspect it will keep for another decade.

(100% grenache) Opaque ruby. Exotic, highly perfumed aromas of black raspberry and cherry preserves, fresh flowers and Asian spices, with a suave undertone of vanilla. Round, fleshy red and dark berry flavors become spicier with air. Seamless and delicious right now, with impressive finishing clarity and a resonating floral quality. Inky ruby. Fresh, complex bouquet of spicy red berries, cherry, minerals and fresh flowers; there's an appealingly Burgundian quality to this wine. Brisk and focused, with sweet red fruit flavors, silky texture and very fine tannins. The finish is impressively pure and vibrant, with the raspberry note clinging tenaciously.
