Ruby-red. Musky aromas of mocha, cherry cola and garam masala on the nose; became increasingly perfumed as it opened in the glass. Sweet, supple and quite suave, with the depth of redcurrant, game, floral and exotic spice flavors to support the oak. Laid-back, elegant Cote-Rotie, more showy today than the Grandes Places - and less dominated by new oak than it was a year ago in the barrel.

Made from 100% Syrah, the 2001 Cote Rotie La Landonne exhibits a saturated blue/purple color in addition to pure notes of liquified minerals intermixed with creosote, blackberries, and blueberries. Dense, ripe, peppery, and rich, this is an impressive effort for the vintage, but patience is warranted. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2018. The president of the syndicate of Cote Rotie growers, the young, dynamic, and talented Jean-Michel Gerin continues to build a strong following for his progressive, modern-styled, barrique-aged Cote Roties. He calls 2001 a “very good vintage ... assuming vignerons did severe crop-thinning.” He believes the wines will be approachable early, much like 1997. Medium ruby. Nose shows smoky oak, dark chocolate and a whiskey note, the latter no doubt from the element of American oak. Rich, supple and sweet, with notes of gunflint, mocha and brown spices. Very round and fat, with the chocolatey character carrying through on the palate. Began less tannic than the Grandes Places, but showed increasing wood tannins with aeration. This seems quite oaky today, and thus shows less typicity than some past vintages of this wine.
