Score 95/100 · Drink 2028-2043, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate, May 2026

With 20% whole clusters, the 2023 Saint-Joseph Le Clos is sourced from the first lieu-dit south of Les Hospices, in the heart of Tournon. It opens with aromas of violet, lilac, dark wild berries and spices. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and deep, it’s layered with a fleshy core of fruit framed by velvety tannins, concluding with a long, ethereal, violet-inflected finish. Combining depth with balance, this is a particularly accomplished Saint-Joseph.

Coming from a higher elevation site, the 2023 Saint Joseph Le Clos shows a cooler, incredibly pure profile in its sweet cassis, graphite, crushed stone, and violet-driven aromatics. Medium to full-bodied and incredibly elegant, it has building yet fine and polished tannins. This is a remarkable Saint-Joseph that will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and cruise for 15-20 years in cold cellars. Drink 2029-2044.

Using grapes from the same name lieu-dit, the outstanding 2023 Saint-Joseph Le Clos initially offers pronounced blood orange, forest strawberry, black cherry and leafy tones, accentuated by fleshy scents. Medium to full-bodied, highly energetic and utterly refined, the 2023 is a gorgeous Le Clos, doubling down with fresh verve on the long, expansive final.

The 2023 Saint-Joseph Le Clos is showing well at this early stage. Intense black cherry, graphite, licorice and spicy gradations rise up from the glass. Fermented with 15% whole clusters, the medium- to full-bodied 2023 touches the palate with elevated flavor concentration and high overall intensity. This is a radiant, forward yet decisively elegant Le Clos with the potential to outperform the 2022 I tasted side by side.
