Tasting notes
From the lower slopes of Hermitage with deeper, more sedimentary soils, the 2023 Ermitage Les Greffieux sports a deep ruby/plum hue and offers a gorgeous nose of red and black fruits intermixed with spring flowers, camphor, graphite, and liquid violets. It's rich and full-bodied, has the vintage's plush, layered mouthfeel, ample tannins, and a great finish. Drink 2026-2036.

The 2023 Ermitage Les Greffieux opens with pencil shavings, black cherry and black plum, with shy, spicy notes adding a touch of complexity. Full-bodied and gently supported by ripe tannins, it shows a hint of austerity at this stage, suggesting it has yet to reveal its full potential. Even so, it resolves with solid length on a composed finish.
Initially shy, the 2023 Ermitage Les Greffieux reveals intricate aromas of pencil shavings, crushed rocks, black cherries, blackberries and violets with time in the glass. The palate is more engaging than the nose, delivering elevated flavor concentration and a remarkable sense of finesse. Freshness is well-maintained, adding vibrancy to the 2023's firm structure. It concludes with a long, focused finish, indicating promise for further evolution.
At the foot of the hill of Hermitage on alluvial soils composed of shingle and clay. Vines more than 50 years old. Certified organic and biodynamic. Cask sample. Deep crimson. Intensely peppery and fresh black fruits, just slightly smoky and floral. Much more charry and smoky on the palate, with contrasting, almost clashing, sweetness and meatiness. Thick, deep and rich in texture. Just fresh enough. Seems heavy-handed with the oak but of course it is still very young. (JH)
