Tasting notes
The 2023 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets includes the first year of production of a new planting, trellised in a helix and cultivated by horse. Offering up pretty aromas of orange zest, red berries and potpourri, it's medium-bodied, supple and fine-boned, with a lively, elegant profile.

A parcel of 0.28 ha (0.69 acres), half planted in 2020 in a spiral form inspired by South American agriculture. Cask sample. Mid ruby. Lovely Pinot nose of sweet red cherry, mushroom and undergrowth. Fine velvety texture with high-toned acidity. There’s plenty of tannin underneath and a slightly metallic sheen. Ripe, savoury finish. (MH)
The 2023 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru, of which 50% is growing on spiral wires, has more mineralité and terroir expression than the Les Mitans, vibrant and focused with touches of oyster shell permeating the crunchy red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very mineral-driven with a sense of tension on the elegant finish. This is quite classical in style, so afford it three or four years in bottle.
