The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Chabiots offers up notes of plums, dark berries, smoke and orange, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless palate, with polished tannins and pure, open-knit profile.

Cask sample. Hand-picked 15 September. Fermentation in thermo-regulated wooden vats, 25% whole bunch. Aged in oak barrels, 30% new, for 16–17 months. Will be bottled January/February 2025. The scent of crushed plum skin and the sweetness of strawberries crushed and licked off a finger tip. Kumquat-sweet acidity. Sylph-like tannins which seem to imbue the wine with orris-root earthy fragrance. Understated and classy. (TC)

The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Chabiots 1er Cru feels rather under-powered on the nose: light red fruit, a touch of woodland, but it is missing some presence. The palate is smooth and rounded, with pastille-like red fruit and fine tannins, though I am seeking a little more grip toward the finish. This is an earlier-drinking Chambolle.

An attractive mid purple. The bouquet is refined and restrained. Concentrated fruit, mostly raspberry, but with some nuances, a suggestion of coffee further back, very well balanced and notably persistent. Few tannins.
