Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Volnay Carelle Sous La Chapelle from Jean-Marc Boillot has a sensual, generous nose with plenty of creamy new oak that rather dominates the fruit and the typicity. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, quite dense in the mouth with a firm backbone, however, it needs more flesh on the finish because this obdurate Volnay feels a little charmless at present.

Good bright red. Red berries, musky minerals and soil tones on the nose and palate. Supple, sweet and moderately rich; less suave than the village wine but stylish nonetheless. Finishes with good length and slightly drying tannins that hit the palate late.
Bright ruby-red. Black fruits and licorice dominate the nose. Suave and sweet but with ripe acidity giving cut to the concentrated blackberry and dark chocolate flavors. Finishes persistent and lively, with a mineral firmness and solid tannic spine. From a crop level of 32 hectoliters per hectare, according to Boillot.
