(made in large part from degenerating vines): Aromas of mirabelle , hazelnut and smoky oak suggest a riper, fatter wine. Plusher than the Charmes but still with a rather laid-back character, offering a suave texture and little in the way of easy fruit sweetness (these wines typically finish with a maximum of one gram per liter of residual sugar, according to Mestre). A note of menthol carries through to the slightly phenolic finish. Mestre recommends pairing the Charmes with fish and richer sauces and this Genevrières with white meats.

The 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières comes from “Les Genevrières-Dessus” with some vines up to 80 or 90 years old. It is more introspective on the nose compared to Les Charmes; however, it shares the same mineralité with subtle flint-like scents emerging with time and complemented by pressed white flowers. The palate is well balanced with fine tension, focused and tensile with just a touch of reduction toward the finish. This constitutes a stylish expression of the vineyard, a Meursault that probably deserves 3 or 4 years in bottle.
