The 2018 Savigny-lès-Beaune Dessus Les Gollardes has lovely delineation on the nose with fern-like aromas, hints of dried honey and a peach skin. The palate is medium-bodied with fine acidity, quite similar to the 2020 vintage with a waxy-textured finish. Fine, but early drinking.

The 2018 Savigny-lès-Beaune Dessus Les Gollardes Blanc displays aromas of green orchard fruit, orange oil and pastry cream. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and nicely balanced, concluding with chalky back-end grip. Open and expressive, it's a Pinot Blanc-based blend.

70% Pinot Gouges (a Pinot Blanc selection made by Henri Gouges) and 30% Chardonnay, interplanted by his grandfather in 1955. His granddad wanted 100% Pinot Gouges but some of the rootstocks he had bought for grafting were too thick so he used Chardonnay – rootstocks were expensive and not to be wasted. 20% new oak. Creamy apple nose, scented with Pinot Blanc rather than Chardonnay with a touch of blossom. Dry, grainy texture and scented apple fruit. Lots of freshness but quite light on the mid palate. Textured grainy finish adds length. Having tasted the 2003, this will probably age a lot longer than my drink dates but I would prefer to drink it younger. (JH)
