A tough wine to figure out and the 2000 Château des Tours Vacqueyras Reserve started out with a definite sprits and a volatile, nail polish nose. With air though, the fizz dissipated and the nose picked up more ripe fruit, spice, roasted herb and licorice notes and the last glass was beautiful with earth and saddle leather aromas rounding out the complex, rich nose. At its best, the palate is medium to full bodied, beautifully textured with nice structure, low acidity and a long finish. I opened this close to 2 hours prior to consuming and poured a big glass and then poured the glass back into the bottle before leaving the bottle open on the counter. In hind sight, I would have given this a lot more air.

The 2000 Vacqueyras is a rich, complete red cuvee. Its deep ruby color is accompanied by a sweet perfume of freshly ground pepper, black cherry liqueur, and strawberries. A sweet attack, medium body, loads of glycerin, and a lush finish suggest consumption over the next 5-7 years is warranted. Importer: Martine's Wines, Novato, CA; tel. (415) 883-0400
Medium red. High-pitched, high-toned aromas of blackberry syrup; rather zinfandel-like. Supple and juicy, with the blackberry flavor complicated by bitter chocolate, mint and black licorice. Finishes firm and spicy, with a repeating note of licorice.

Domaine des Tours is a separate label to Ch. des Tours, however both ranges are made at the same Vacqueyras property. Part of the Rayas galaxy and made by Emmanuel Reynaud, the wines are a source of great value and offer a glimpse of the Rayas style.
