Score 93/100 · Drink 1984-2024, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Jul 2020

The 1964 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru opens nicely in the glass to offer up a complex and fully mature bouquet of macerated cherries and strawberries mingled with sweet forest floor, tobacco and summer truffle. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and elegantly layered, it's built around powdery tannins and ripe acids, concluding with a long and sapid finish. From a perfectly conserved bottle from a French cellar, this is fully mature in regular formats and now is the time to drink it.

The 1964 Clos de Vougeot is a wine that I have encountered once before. This performed similarly to the one drunk back in 2013: turbid in colour, singed leather on the nose that is dominated by sous-bois aromas, with that distinctive "autumnal" finish. There are signs that it must have been a fleshy wine in its youth but frankly I would consume bottles in the not too distant future. Tasted at a private dinner in Burgundy.
