From a limestone-rich and--for this region--unusually steep, terraced site (best known internationally as a source of Keller Spätburgunder), this leads with mysteriously mossy, alkaline, ocean breeze scents. The firm palate is similarly informed by elusive mossy and mineral elements, while almost mouth-shakingly tart lemon leads to an invigorating, vibrant, prodigious finish of saliva-inducing salinity and eye-opening brightness. I sometimes weary of adamantly dry, austerely piquant, lean German Rieslings whose absence of fruit one is expected to take as a sign of seriousness and profundity. But as long as there is genuine intrigue along with attention-getting energy, refreshing juiciness and truly impressive persistence, as is the case here, then I take delight in current consumption as well as in contemplating the wine’s future evolution.

Intense ripe fruit aromas on the nose of the 2014 Nieder-Florsheim Frauenberg Riesling trocken GG lead to a full-bodied, rich and juicy, well structured but still somewhat unbalanced palate. Its finish is still closed, and somewhat bitter and drying. However, the salinity and intensity are promising; the wine just needs its time.

The Frauenberg conveys the herbaceous fragrance of spontaneous fermentation in a subtle way and embellishes it expertly with delicate aromas of citrus fruit and stone dust. Kicks in with quite a sweet expression of fruit on the palate, but fine spicy and mineral notes take over on the finish. (MS)
