Score 89-91/100 · Drink 2028-2042, Neal Martin, Jan 2025

The 2023 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru has an introverted nose of dark berry fruit laced with tobacco and mulchy scents, which gains more clarity as it opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly candied opening and a grainy texture. Orange rind and marmalade notes infuse dark berry fruit, giving way to something slightly Tuscan on the spicy finish.

More crimson than ruby. A little bit of wood showing alongside the more robust darker fruit. Rounded and ripe cherries now take over the middle ground before a satisfying and structured finish which perseveres very nicely.

Mathias Parent and his sister Caroline have produced a marvellous, complex Clos de Vougeot. Although the colour is deceptively light, there are pronounced aromas of blackberry fruit accented with peony, peppery spice, and a savoury, smoky underpinning. The texture is structured and firm, but not overly so, and the wine lingers on the palate with gentle persistence. The grapes are from parcels in Musigni and La Garenne that formerly belonged to Gros Frère et Soeur – the family has traded some vineyards between themselves to prepare for the next generation; previous vintages here were from purchased fruit.
